Choosing your perfect New Zealand wedding venue

Will it be a traditional wedding in one of our city's grand historic churches or a more intimate affair amidst snow-capped peaks high in the Southern Alps? Choosing your wedding venue is one of many big decisions to be made before the ceremony can begin - and one of the most important. You will find that when the venue is confirmed, other details will begin to fall into place.

Once you have a wedding budget, a good way to start narrowing down the search for the venue is to ask yourselves some of the following questions.

1. How many guests will there be?

You don't need a firm count at this early stage but having a reasonable idea of your wedding size will help rule some venues in or out immediately. You may also want to think about whether your guests have particular needs. Will there be a lot of young toddlers to cater for? Do you need to consider wheelchair accessibility?

2. What time of year will your wedding be?

Different seasons can affect the look, character and practicality of a venue. A vineyard wedding in spring will look quite different in autumn and even more so in winter. Generally, the further north in New Zealand you are, the more equitable the climate but any outdoor venue will come with challenges for a winter wedding.

3. What time of day?

Visit potential venues at the same time of day as you hope to have your wedding. Spaces can look very different as the light changes.

4. Do you want a venue that offers a full package - everything from accommodation to catering?

Or do you just want to hire the space? Or perhaps you'd prefer somewhere that offers a flexible approach where you can pick and choose the services you need.

5. What style and feel will really reflect you?

A luxury lakeside lodge in Queenstown, a romantic barn in the picturesque New Zealand countryside, tasting fine wines at one of the country's many excellent vineyards, or cruising in the Bay of Islands or the Marlborough Sounds. Choose somewhere meaningful for you.

When you begin your research and contact potential venues, don't hesitate to ask all the questions you need to. The choices of wedding venue in New Zealand these days are infinite and it's not an easy process so find people who are receptive to your ideas and who you can trust to minimise your stress and maximise your wonderful memories.
