Explore the Karangaheke Gorge; a slice of NZ History

The weekend is upon us and the sun is shining! What better way to spend the holiday than re connecting with nature - wining, dining and taking time to recharge! The nearby Karangahake Gorge is a diverse and beautiful landscape with a rich historical background. Visitors can explore relics of the past such as the Talisman battery (est 1880), railways and pieces of machinery left from when the Gorge was mined for Gold.

A short 30 minute drive from the French Country House, this winding canyon carved by the Ohinemuri river connects points of interest 'Paeroa' and 'Waihi' and is part of the Hauraki Rail Trail. Enjoy a relaxing walk or bike ride on one of the many historic tracks, followed by a picnic on the rivers edge. Or perhaps lunch at the beautiful Ohinemuri Estate Wines nestled in the hillside overlooking the river- the food is divine!
